FRP Grating for Food & Beverage Processing
A food plant washes down with 60–80 °C caustic foam daily. Steel walkways rust, concrete spalls, and both shed debris toward product zones. Molded FRP grating drains freely, survives the chemical wash, and can be hosed, foamed and sanitized without the coating maintenance that audit teams flag first.
Typical installations
- Wash-down walkways and mezzanines above production lines
- Kill floors, scalding and evisceration platforms in poultry and meat plants
- Brewery and bottling line catwalks — caustic and acid dialect exposure
- Conveyor crossover stairs and operator platforms
- CIP (clean-in-place) skid access platforms
- Cold store and freezer walkways — stays grippy at -30 °C
Hygiene-driven choices
| Requirement | Recommendation | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Free-draining deck | Open molded grating | No pooling; liquid and debris pass through |
| Small-part exclusion | Mini mesh (19 mm) | Stops cut gloves and trims reaching lines below |
| Closed appearance areas | Grating with bonded gritted cover plate | Solid washable surface where open mesh is unwanted |
| Chemical wash | ISO polyester or vinyl ester | Resists caustic foam, peracetic acid, chlorine foam |
Audits are easier with FRP
Audit teams look for flaking paint, rust scale and pooling water near product zones — the three things steel decks do on a schedule. FRP has no coating to flake, no rust to shed and drains by design. Plants typically replace walkways floor by floor during summer shutdowns, keeping each area in production until its turn.
