FRP Grating for Pulp, Paper & Waste-to-Energy
Pulp and paper combines the two worst corrosion regimes in industry: hot alkaline black liquor on the process side and acidic flue-gas condensate on the energy side. Waste-to-energy adds both plus chloride from flue gas. Steel walkways in these buildings are maintenance liabilities from year one; FRP grating carries the same traffic with none of the chemistry problem.
Where it goes
- Paper machine catwalks and pit walkways
- Chemical preparation and bleach plant platforms
- Black liquor and evaporator area walkways
- Boiler, economizer and flue-gas cleaning platforms
- Waste bunker and crane cab access decks
- Effluent treatment plant walks and covers
Selection by chemistry
| Area | System | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Machine rooms, dry areas | 38 mm molded, ISO polyester | Gritted surface; economical |
| Bleach plant, chemical prep | Vinyl ester | Chlorine dioxide and hypochlorite duty |
| Flue-gas condensate zones | Vinyl ester, 50 mm | Acidic, warm, wet — worst case for steel |
| Effluent plant | ISO polyester | Same basis as municipal wastewater |
Machine-room downtime is the real cost
Replacing corroded steel catwalks around a paper machine means scheduling around production. FRP panels are light enough for a two-person crew to change a full catwalk section during a normal weekend shutdown — no hot-work permits, no crane, no welding near the machine.
