Coastal Boardwalk: 830 m² Heel-Safe FRP Decking in a Nature Reserve
| Location | Zeeland, Netherlands |
| Completed | 2024-05 |
| Quantity | 830 m² boardwalk |
| Products | Mini-mesh grating 38 mm · FRP handrail · Custom radius panels |
The challenge
The timber boardwalk through a salt-marsh reserve was replaced every 7–9 years. The council required a 20-year-plus surface that would not splinter, would be safe for heeled footwear and wheelchairs, and would not shed preservative chemicals into the protected marsh.
The solution
830 m² of 38 mm mini-mesh molded grating in light gray with gritted surface, radius-cut panels following the path curves, matching handrail, and substructure-fixing details designed to avoid point loads on the timber-pile foundations retained from the old deck.
Outcomes
- 20-year maintenance contract for the walkway reduced to inspection and cleaning
- Wheelchair and heel safety achieved through the 19 mm mesh without a solid deck
- No preservative leachate — environmental permit discussions were straightforward
- Council replicated the specification for two neighbouring reserve paths
