Vinyl Ester vs Isophthalic Polyester: When the Upgrade Actually Pays

The two resins differ in one chemical feature that drives everything: the ester linkage count. ISO polyester molecules carry many ester groups — the bonds that hydrolysis attacks. Vinyl ester's epoxy backbone carries far fewer, at the ends of the chain only. Fewer targets, slower attack, longer life in aggressive media.

What the data shows

Continuous immersion, seawaterGood short-term, blistering risk long-termDesigned for immersion service
Caustic (NaOH)Poor to moderateGood to moderate concentrations

Solvents (aromatics, ketones)LimitedBest of the standard systems

Where ISO is the right answer

Splash and fume duty: wastewater plants, food wash-down, general chemical plant walkways, marine air. ISO handles all of these for decades at about 15 % over ortho pricing. Specifying vinyl ester across a whole WWTP is spending 25–30 % more for capacity the deck never touches.

Where vinyl ester pays twice

Strong acid service: the retention data above means an ISO panel in 10 % sulfuric splash is effectively half a lifecycle product. Immersion and tidal zones: vinyl ester was developed for FRP tanks and pipe in contact; it is the only standard grating resin designed for it. Hot acidic condensate: flue-gas and scrubber areas combine every degradation mechanism at once.

The arithmetic: a vinyl ester panel costs ~40 % more. One avoided ISO replacement cycle (about every 4–6 years in acid duty) pays the difference — in acid service the upgrade is not a premium, it is the cheaper purchase.
