FRP Grating Specification Guide
Most FRP grating disputes trace back to a thin specification: “38 mm molded grating, green” leaves resin, load verification, surface, fixings and documentation all open to the cheapest interpretation. This page is a clause-level template you can paste into a project specification and trim.
1. Material and manufacture
- Grating shall be molded or pultruded fiberglass reinforced plastic, manufactured by machine compaction (molded) or pultrusion (pultruded) — no hand lay-up panels.
- Glass content: min. 25 % by weight (molded), min. 35 % in the bearing direction (pultruded).
- Resin system: [isophthalic polyester / vinyl ester / phenolic] — selected per the chemical resistance schedule in Appendix [X].
- Surface: integral gritted anti-slip surface, quartz-bonded; meniscus only where noted.
- UV stabilization: pigmented throughout the full section; surface veil on exposed faces.
2. Performance requirements
- Allowable uniform load: [value] kg/m² at span [value] mm, deflection not exceeding L/180.
- Concentrated load: [value] kN on a [100 × 100] mm patch at the same span and deflection limit.
- Load performance shall be supported by the manufacturer's published, panel-specific load table; generic “typical” tables are not acceptable for the specified configuration.
- Fire: flame spread index ≤ 25 per ASTM E84 (where required); smoke developed index limit [value].
3. Fixings and fabrication
- Panel layout drawings with numbered panels, cut-outs and clip positions shall be submitted for approval before manufacture.
- Fixings: 316 stainless steel clips and hardware throughout; clip spacing per the manufacturer's installation guide.
- Site-cut edges of pultruded grating shall be end-capped or resin-sealed.
- Stair treads: molded, 280 mm going, bonded grit nosing 50–75 mm wide.
4. Quality documents to require
- Mill certificate per batch: resin type, glass content, panel dimensions and weight
- Panel-specific load table, signed, for the delivered configuration
- Chemical resistance confirmation for the project media list, in writing
- Fire test reports where the specification requires them
- Third-party inspection option: SGS / BV witness inspection before shipment, with report
5. The two clauses that save projects
Clause A — span confirmation: “The supplier shall verify the actual clear spans from the issued drawings and confirm the load performance of the offered panel at those spans before order acceptance.” This kills the classic failure of ordering to nominal 1.0 m spans that are built at 1.2 m.
Clause B — media confirmation: “The supplier shall confirm in writing the suitability of the offered resin system against the chemical media list, including concentration and temperature ranges.” This transfers resin responsibility to the party with the data.
