How FRP Grating Is Tested: Flexural, Tensile, Bar Load and Fire Methods
Data-sheet numbers come from standardized tests. Knowing the methods tells you which numbers describe your deck and which describe the resin cup.
Material tests (the data-sheet trio)
| Method | Measures | Typical grating values |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM D790 (flexural) | Strength and modulus in bending | Flexural modulus 6–10 GPa (laminate) |
| ASTM D638 (tensile) | Tensile strength and modulus | Tensile strength 100–250 MPa |
| ASTM D695 (compression) | Compressive strength | 150–250 MPa |
Critical caveat: these describe coupons of laminate, often resin-rich. They are comparability checks between batches, not deck performance.
Panel and bar tests (the ones that matter to you)
- Panel load tests: a full panel on real supports, loaded to defined deflection limits — this is what a panel-specific load table should be built from, correlated across spans and depths
- Bar load tests (pultruded): single I-bar on a span, loaded to L/180 and failure — validates the per-bar capacity behind multi-bar panels
- Surface tests: COF per slip methods, grit adhesion by mechanical abrasion
- Fire methods: ASTM E84, EN 13501-1 SBI, IMO FTP — covered in the fire guide
Reading a report critically
Three questions: What did the specimen represent? (laminate coupon vs full panel). Who ran it? (in-house vs accredited lab). What batch does it bind? (one-time study vs routine production control). JINGLUE's practice: routine in-house QC on every batch, panel-specific load tables signed per order, and third-party (SGS/BV) witness testing available for project-critical configurations — ask, and we schedule it before shipment.
